Presenters:

Keith Smalkowski, Oregon Research Institute

Presentation Details:

We will describe results from an RCT efficacy study examining the effectiveness of Friends on the Block, a comprehensive early literacy curriculum, with 132 elementary students who have complex needs. We will focus on program features, literacy outcomes, and the lasting results of intervention at one-year follow up.

Participants will be able to: 1. Become familiar with key early literacy strands which are part of an evidence-based comprehensive literacy program designed specifically for students with complex needs. 2. Analyze the impact of an efficacy trial of the evidence-based comprehensive literacy program on the early literacy skills of students with complex needs. 3. Strategize implementation of effective early literacy instruction in their own schools or programs.

"Picking Up the Pace: Effective Approaches to Accelerate Fluency and Comprehension in Students with Disabilities"

Thursday, March 12, 11:45 AM-12:45 PM

Presenters:

Jill Allor, Southern Methodist University

Gregory Benner, University of Alabama

Stephanie Al Otaiba, Southern Methodist University

Keith Smolkowski, Oregon Research Institute

Presentation Details:

This presentation explores instructional practices that helped "pick up the pace" of literacy growth for students with complex needs who received the Friends on the Block literacy intervention as part of a large-scale randomized control trial (RCT). We highlight case stories of specific students in our study.

Participants will be able to: 1. Consider the challenges of teaching students with complex needs (including those with IDD, autism, and learning disabilities) how to read and how to do so effectively and efficiently. 2. Understand how intensive, customized instruction can support high literacy expectations for students with complex needs. 3. Develop practical knowledge of how to "pick up the pace" of literacy instruction for their students with complex needs in their classrooms tomorrow!
